Horror games, while not for everyone, have had a huge impact on video games as a whole. From the iconic monsters that walk their halls, to the feeling we have when hearing chainsaws, horror games remind us how much fun it can be to get scared.

Resident Evil 7
Resident Evil 7 launched in 2017 and it’s one of the best and scariest horror games to date. Skulking through the Baker’s mansion is absolutely terrifying, especially if you play in VR. And might we suggest giving it another run through while we wait for Resident Evil Village because it doesn't appear that title will be all that scary.2
The Evil Within 2
Terror incarnate, that’s what The Evil Within 2 is. It doesn’t matter how strong your weapons are, if the horrors in-game decide they want you dead, then you die, it’s just a question of when. So if you're looking for a good fright, you don't need to look very far.3
Resident Evil 4
Resident Evil 4 completely redefined shooters and horror games when it first released in 2005. And now after 10-years of playing, every time I hear a chainsaw or moaning sounds, a chill travels down my spine. It's terrifying, and we love it!4
Silent Hill 2 Trying to save your wife is a powerful motivator for any game. But when you find yourself trapped in a hellish town having to fight a giant with a gigantic blade, and a pyramid on his head, you find a new appreciation for sleeping with the lights on.

Outlast 2
Imagine trying to survive a group of monsters, and all you have is a camera, some batteries, and a few lockers you can fit in. Well, that's Outlast, a supremely terrifying horror game based around your ability to survive rather than fight. It's like if the highschool experience was turned into a playable game horror game, expect you put yourself in the lockers willingly.6
Amnesia The Dark Descent
There was horror before Amnesia, but Amnesia might be the one to have perfected the genre. Even ten years after the game's release, the sound of the invisible monster’s footsteps in a cold flooded room strikes fear in gamers’ heart.7
Dead Space
Deep Space follows engineer Isaac Clark and his fight against the ancient alien horde of Necromorphs who have been unleashed in this sci-fi horror adventure game. Clarke proves engineers are more than just useful thinkers and that when you put your mind to something, anything can be accomplished.8
Silent Hill Demo - PT
Who says short experiences can’t scare you? P.T. may have just been a tech demo but its descent into madness is one of the most terrifying experiences in gaming. And while the demo was formally discontinued you can still find a fan version online that is free to play. (click the link)9
Until Dawn
Keeping a bunch of horny, dumba** teenagers alive is hard enough, but Until Dawn makes you keep them alive, while a paranormal entity tries to pick them off one by one, making this one of the best, if not also most frustrating, horror games ever made.10
Bloodborne
The more you play the more this game creeps you out. A deadly illness is spreading through the streets, and while danger and madness may hide behind every corner, the dread you feel while playing Bloodborne is intense.11
Soma
Who are we when you strip away our humanity? That’s the question Soma asks through the course of its visual nightmare but hauntingly arresting campaign. Soma is another survival horror game that was released in 2015 by Frictional Games, and though is lesser-known still packs a creepy punch.12
Alien Isolation
Run. Hide. Fight. Those are the only three options in Alien Isolation. Alien fans have been running their mouths for decades about what they’d do if they ever got to fight the Xenomorph Queen, now they have the chance to find out. Released in 2014 and developed by Creative Assembly, Alien Isolation is a must-play for all the horror movie fans among us.13
Layers of Fear
Layers of Fear takes a more nuanced approach to storytelling. Instead of giving the player everything at once, it makes you earn, every, horrific bit of knowledge you learn through the game. Released in 2016 and developed by the Bloober Team, Layers of Fear is dubbed a first-person psychedelic horror game, and we can attest that it is exactly that!14
Fatal Frame 2
Without Fatal Frame, most modern horror wouldn’t exist. Instead of grabbing guns, knives, and axes, the pictures you take of ghosts with your camera is what keeps you alive. Released in 2003 and developed by Tecmo, Fatal Frame has been serving up the scares and set the bar for all horror games, and for good reason.15
Alan Wake Who knew being a writer could be so terrifying? Alan Wake released on the Xbox 360 in 2010 and showed gamers what the terrifying inside of a writer’s mind is like. This action-adventure game developed by Remedy Entertainment, might not seem creepy on the outside, but once you get into the character's head, there is no getting out.
